Desire – “Tears From Heaven”

At the moment, Glass Candy/Chromatics mastermind Johnny Jewel is the driving force for a whole mob of eerily retro Italo-disco projects, many of whom will contribute to the forthcoming comp After Dark 2. We’ve already seen Chromatics’ video for the After Dark 2 track “Looking For Love,” and now Desire, Jewel’s duo with singer Megan Louise, have shared their video for the compilation track “Tears From Heaven,” which I assure you is not an Eric Clapton cover. (That would be “Tears In Heaven,” but I think I can be forgiven for momentary panic there.) The song brings all of Jewel’s trademark sensory faraway bump, and frequent collaborator Alberto Rossini directed the grainy video.

The Antlers - "Drift Dive" (Official Music Video)

The video for the Antlers' "Drift Dive" is a fairly literal interpretation of the Undersea song's title. It's a first-person descent deep into a body of water.

Bleeding Rainbow - "Drift Away" (Official Music Video)

Philly garage-poppers Bleeding Rainbow, formerly Reading Rainbow, will return early next year with their new album Yeah Right. The video for their raggedly catchy new single “Drift Away” alternates foggy band-performance footage with a tough-to-follow stop-motion narrative about a skull-faced alien scientist.

Das Racist – “Girl”

In the brand-new video for “Girl,” an infectious plastic-pop track from Das Racist’s 2011 album Relax, a lovestruck mullethead attempts to win over a young lady by pulling out some of his most absurd public dance moves. He also fights an enormous biker for reasons that aren’t explained, probably because they don’t have to be. Aristotle Athiras 
directs, and somebody needs to build a Step Up sequel around star Fahim Anwar immediately.

The Sea And Cake - “Harps”

The Sea And Cake dropped “Harps” in July; it was the first single from the band’s wonderful new album, Runner, which was released in September. So it makes sense that they’d wait till late October to give us a video for “Harps.” The clip was directed by Jay Buim, and follows a pair of twee-looking girls blissfully killing time in the suburbs. It reminds me a lot of the film version of Ghost World, actually — which is kinda weird, because along with being the Sea And Cake’s guitarist, Archer Prewitt is also a visual artist from the Chicago alt-comics scene that spawned Daniel Clowes … who created Ghost World. Weird, right? No?

Last night, I was doing Google News searches for “windows” — as in, “Should I put big Xs on my windows with duct tape, so I’m not killed in my sleep when this hurricane makes landfall and decimates New York City with 500-mph, glass-shattering, gale-force winds?” However, my search was thwarted with news of last Friday’s launch of Microsoft’s Windows 8, which was slightly less urgent, for my purposes. Nonetheless, the Windows promotional campaign rolls on, and it includes a clip featuring Best Coast (thus leading astray my hurricane-related searches including the terms “windows” and “coast”). The commercial is set to the band’s “The Only Place,” and intercuts Best Coast video with Windows 8 features, ostensibly leading one to imagine the ways in which Bethany and Bobb might engage with the user interface.

Titus Andronicus "In a Big City" (Official Video)

The video for “In A Big City,” the rousing lead single from Titus Andronicus’s not-The Monitor-but-still-great new album Local Business, depicts frontman Patrick Stickles as a scowling solitary figure, fighting through crowds and crossing desolate urban-blight Jersey landscapes so that he can arrive on the Hudson River’s banks and stare down the promised land on the other side. It’s a strong, striking bit of imagery. Isaac Ravishankara directs.

of Montreal – “Sails Hermaphorditic” (NSFW)

The video for “Sails Hermaphroditic,” a song from of Montreal’s new rarities collection Daughter Of Cloud, switches back and forth between a brutal good-times rumble in the middle of a park — one that involves Jell-O and a referee for some reason — and a naked psychedelic dance party — one that may or may not involve actual on-camera fucking. Suffice to say: This is very NSFW, and you will be entertained. Kevin and Nina Barnes direct.

M83 – “Steve McQueen”

Sadly, M83′s video for the great Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming! burner “Steve McQueen” does not feature the return of the glowy-eyed mutant children from the “Midnight City” and “Reunion” videos. But the clip does stay in keeping with the superpowered-kids theme. In this one, a tuxedoed young boy magically levitates a host of toy animals in his back yard. The clip is the winner of a contest that the band held, and Balthazar Auxietre and Sylvain Derosne direct.

Sinkane - "Runnin'" (Official Music Video)

Sinkane, aka Ahmed Gallab, collaborator with Caribou, Yeasayer, Of Montreal, and more, has shared the video for Mars highlight "Runnin'". In the clip, a revolution breaks out. Guns are brandished, rocks are thrown, and, naturally, blood is spilled.

Growing up in the bucolic waterfront village of Northport, NY, Chuck Betz, Ryan Naideau and Jimmy Shelton played punk rock together since high school, in a succession of bands more than happy to set up at any house party, BBQ or makeshift venue that would have them. The familiar strain of classic rock is the go-to sound on the North Shore of Long Island, but they lived in an alternate universe where Ryan convinced his parents to let him turn the family basement into an occasional all-ages show space, hosting touring groups, and rounding out the bill with whatever band he and his friends were in at the time. Fast forward to 2008, the boys had based themselves in Brooklyn and Nude Beach was born; the group slowly integrated themselves into the local DIY community, performing in dive bars and warehouse lofts, often several times a week, playing more than 100 shows in less than four years together. They self-released cassettes and vinyl LPs, they booked their own tours, and played in infinite side-projects and spin-off bands at every punk venue in North Brooklyn and beyond.

But while Nude Beach is very much a part of the Brooklyn DIY scene, it's always been more in spirit than in sound; sure, they're as beer-soaked, overdriven and raw as any group around, yet as hard as they've tried to ignore it, the trio could never quite shake the rock & roll of Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen which sound-tracked their Long Island youth, and battered vinyl from the Byrds, the Replacements and the Jam sits side by side in their record collections with the hardcore and indie LPs and 7"s that brought the friends together in the first place. In an increasingly fractured music scene, Chuck, Ryan and Jimmy play against fashion and deliver straight up rock & roll, and moreover, they do it better than anyone has in a long time. They've got the songs, they've got the sound, and they've got the f**k-all attitude that just can't be faked. Nude Beach will rock you if you let them -- turns out, it's still more fun than just about anything else going on.

Danny Brown – “Wit It”

In his video for “Wit It,” Danny Brown steps into animated, psychedelic, low-res versions of the album covers that Pen & Pixel used to make for No Limit and Cash Money. He also spends some serious quality time with a mob of strippers. Probably best to consider this one NSFW. Bijoux Altamirano directs.

Sufjan Stevens – “Mr. Frosty Man”

Next week, Sufjan Stevens drops his Christmas-music EP box set Silver & Gold: Songs For Christmas. And even though his seasonal slopfest “Mr. Frosty Man” isn’t the best Christmas song you’re ever likely to hear, credit it with being the inspiration and basis for director Lee Hardcastle‘s ridiculous claymation video, which involves Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus, and a horde of ravenous radioactive zombies. I don’t know if I could call it NSFW, but it is just incredibly gruesome in that classic Evil Dead gore-slapstick way.

Arca – “Manners”

NY producer Arca released the Stretch 2 LP this summer, and this super-pristine HD screensaver-style video directed by Jesse Kanda just now. It’s spacious, synth-based, with hip hop in its DNA and MDMA in its gut.
