U2 - “The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)” Street Art Video

U2′s Songs Of Innocence opener “The Miracle Of Joey Ramone” already got one video that was basically a full-length version of the band’s colorful Apple ad. Now, as part of the Films Of Innocence project, here’s another clip for the song by Belfast native and Brooklyn resident Oliver Jeffers. In keeping with the Films Of Innocence theme, it’s based around street art in Northern Ireland. It’s a good look for the song and way more engaging than most videos that track the creation of a work of art.

CocoRosie – “Gravediggress” (Official Video)

The art-pop sister duo CocoRosie released the new album Tales Of A Grass Widow earlier this year, and it’s already yielded two impressive videos, the prettily disorienting “After The Afterlife” and the prettily disturbing “Child Bride.” Bianca Casady, one half of the duo, directed the album’s third video, for “Gravediggress.” It’s a fucked-up vision of a clown and a masked witch figure. Casady filmed the video in the south of France, and in a note on YouTube, she writes that it’s “a loose journey thru the psyche of a lonely outcast who finds ecstasy and company in nature.”

Shot in Southern France, spanning several different seasons, The Gravediggress emerges from the imagination of the clown. Played and danced by Biño Sauitzvy, The Clown oscillates between young and old, innocent and deranged. Our mother plays the masked Gravediggress who’s stuffed hands struggle at menial tasks such as picking wheat and taking laundry from the line. The narrative is a loose journey thru the psyche of a lonely outcast who finds ecstasy and company in nature. The filming was spontaneous though it took much more time than a typical music video and without the pressure of a studio and crew we were able to wander and shoot in this way. We let the work steep and revisited the project months later for another stage of development. My working relationship with Biño, a Brazilian choreographer based in Paris, who has also trained in circus and clowning, started in 2011 when we developed Nightshift, my first theatrical work. We also started then to discover in dance, the brokenness of the outcast. He played a homeless-drunk, clown called Hummingbird Man. I have worked on many videos over the last 14 years and have shot many of them in this same location but this is my most narrative attempt to date. I prefer to shoot intimately, just me and the other and the force of the elements. Some times our hands got frozen cold, or we got attacked by swarms of mosquitos, spiders crawled out of every hole and we truly marveled over the moon and pink sky.

Jay Z – "Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film"

Last month, Jay Z stopped by the Pace Gallery in NYC to perform “Picasso Baby” for six straight hours, rapping directly into the face of attendees one at a time. The “performance art piece” was documented for a music video of sorts, in the form of a short film titled Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film. The short film aired last night on HBO. It starts end ends with interviews with Jay Z, and features appearances by various attendees of the event including Marina Abramovic (who inspired the piece), Judd Apatow, Pablo Picasso’s granddaughter Diana Widmaier Picasso, and others.

"Exit Through the Kwik-E-Mart" is the fifteenth episode of the Season 23. It originally aired on March 4, 2012. Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Kenny Scharf and Robbie Conal guest star and Nick McKaig performed the end title song.

Sypnosis

In order to get back at his dad, Bart goes undercover as a graffiti street artist and plasters Homer's unflattering image all over Springfield. But one night, Bart and Milhouse get caught in the act by established street artists Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Kenny Scharf and Robbie Conal (guest voicing as themselves), and to Bart's surprise, they invite him to exhibit his satirical artwork in his very own gallery show. Meanwhile, a hip, new health food superstore opens in Springfield that threatens to put Apu and the Kwik-E-Mart out of business.

Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter Directs Short Film

Thomas Bangalter, one half of Daft Punk, has directed and done cinematography for a three-minute short film that serves as a sort of advertisement for the new collection from the fashion line Co. The film stars Élodie Bouchez, Bangalter’s actress wife. She plays a woman taking care of a sick man, and lots of weird stuff happens. Also, she cries. The soundtrack is all operatic and not-at-all robot-rockish. But it has to be said: Everyone looks very nice!

A little homage to the Argentinian poet Jorge Luis Borges, one of the greatest writers of all time. This video was shot in the winter of 2010 in Buenos Aires and Capilla del Señor, Argentina.

Directed and shot by me with a Canon 5d. I edited and color graded it in Final Cut Pro using Twixtor, Knoll Light Factory and Magic Bullet.

The Artist and Filmmaker Presents An Exclusive Vignette Inspired By Her Magical New Film

Miranda July dreams up an idiosyncratic solution to the interruptions of modern life in "A Handy Tip for the Easily Distracted." An offcut from July's latest film, The Future, the scene has been reconstituted by the actress, writer and filmmaker for NOWNESS, complete with a score by David Byrne collaborator Steven Reker. July drew on her performance art piece, “Things We Don't Understand and Are Definitely Not Going to Talk About” for her sophomore feature; it follows 2005's Me and You and Everyone We Know, which won the Caméra d'Or prize at Cannes. The film's plot centers on LA couple Sophie (July) and Jason (Hamish Linklater), whose decision to adopt the sickly stray cat Paw Paw sees them grapple with the impending responsibility of the pet's care. This being a July vehicle, things take a characteristically kooky turn, with Paw Paw stepping in as narrator, and the couple embarking on a quest to seize the day: Sophie strives to reach her artistic potential by creating a definitive dance number, and Jason hands his future over to fate, following "signs" from the universe. We spoke to the prolific July, who has also exhibited as a performance artist at the Guggenheim and the Whitney Biennale and written for publications including The Paris Review and The New Yorker.

Why didn't the scene above make the final cut of The Future?

This scene was meant to make it clear that Sophie was struggling against distraction, after losing time on YouTube—we all know how alluring these distractions are, and here we are seeing her attempting to take charge. I had her rig up a grape juice booby trap. In the next scene, which is actually in the movie, you see her run past the table and her white dress is covered in grape juice, which seemed like a funny visual way of showing that she had sacrificed the dress for the internet. Except that nobody got the whole grape juice trap. I don't think a single person understood why she was doing any of it. It just seemed like a bizarre performance in the middle of the movie. So I cut it. It's nice to show it here, and hopefully with the cards it isn't too mystifying.

What compelled you to tell a story so focused on temporality?

It didn't start out being about time, but the longer it took to make, the older I got and the more pressure I felt. It was made more acute by me being in my mid-thirties—a very particular time in any woman's life.

Can you sum up what the movie is about for you?
My work is never only about the story—it is always about what is inside the people who are in the story. But, in the most basic sense, it's about time: getting through it, minute by minute, stopping it, and the end of it, death.

You’ve said that The Future is your version of a horror movie. Can you explain why?
The character I play in the movie fails to make the dance she sets out to make, and then flees her life. She moves to a world where she will never have to try and fail again. No one cares if she's creative there. This is a sort of horror movie for a person like me, who has created her sense of self through making things. But it's also a fantasy: a fear-fantasy.


The Future will be released in the US on July 29, and in the UK on November 4

Bali Engle helped me colour and provided the beautiful animated sequences for the insect loop and fishes. Margot Tsakiri-Scanatovits and Manav Dhir also provided colouring skills and contributed to the animation of the insects. Steve McInerney constructed the final edit with perfect timing and imagination.

Wolfgang Gartner - Illmerica

Director Ryan McNamara is also the lead animator on this whirlwind tour of American history, from the Mayflower landing to the present day. Everything move so fast here, but besides the many references to our bloody history, I love how he mixed together objects from different eras to show new and surprising connections. Nestled in the elegant setting, cuckoo clocks, wolfs and deer heads, the ratio of love/hate relationship between two beautiful sister lifeless is told through both soft and mechanical loop movement between kisses, hair pulling, whispers and sticking in a memory suspended in time.
