The Good Life - “The Troubadour’s Green Room” (Official Video)

Everybody’s Coming Down is the fifth album from Cursive frontman Tim Kasher’s other band the Good Life, but it’s their first in seven years. “The Troubadour’s Green Room” is a wry indie-folker off the record about wonder, expectations and reality, and how they rarely match up. Today they’ve shared a crisp, line-drawn animation by Bryan Brinkman to accompany the song.

PUP - “Dark Days” (Official Video)

Toronto pop-punk band PUP have been touring all over the globe from their native Canada to the US to Europe to Australia. The Band To Watch alums just released a new video for “Dark Days” showing how taxing tour life can be via animation. The cartoon video by Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux and Chandler Levack follows the band’s tour in North America and Europe, showing the highs and the lows of life on the road. Even with all the injuries, the alcohol poisoning, and the never-ending exhaustion, there are moments that remind them why they are a band. One scene shows the band climbing on the roof of their van to look at the Northern Lights. The end makes up for everything the band’s gone through — gear being stolen, playing empty gigs, being accosted in the bathroom, etc. — when they share the sketches of their Instagram pics with all the amazing things they’ve done. Then, the real video clip of PUP exiting the stage shows just how far this band has come with a room packed to the brim of cheering fans.

DMA’S - “Your Low” (Official Video)

“Your Low” was released on DMA’S recent self-titled EP, and it’s the kind of happy-sad song that fits into your day no matter what kind of mood you’re in. It’s a love song overflowing with pathos, and the new Chad VanGaalen-directed video for the track puts a whimsical spin on its lyrics. The animated interpretation of “Your Low” is an abstract rendering of its deeper meaning; shape-shifting characters ooze and turn themselves inside out, exposing all of their hidden parts to counter the song’s quiet pining.

Major Lazer - “2 Cups” (Feat. Riff Raff) Video

Major Lazer have a new album called Peace Is The Mission coming out, but to promote their new FXX cartoon, they’re also cranking out non-album tracks these days. Most recently, we saw their video for the Andy Samberg collab “Bass Drop.” And now they’re teaming up with the Mad Decent rap clown Riff Raff for “2 Cups,” a song about consuming dangerous amounts of codeine cough syrup. The track’s new video, from animator Jeremy Sengly, is basically a lyric video, though it does feature a Skeletor-looking cartoon version of Riff Raff.

Major Lazer - “Bass Drop” (Feat. Andy Samberg) Video

Andy Samberg’s Lonely Island crew hilariously parodied the EDM industrial complex with the SNL Digital Short “When Will The Bass Drop?” So it’s pleasantly meta to see Samberg guesting on Major Lazer’s new single, “Bass Drop,” a song built around exactly the kind of Transformers/modem digital bass explosions Samberg and company were lampooning. The track arrives with an animated video by Andrew Chittenden starring the main character from FXX’s new Major Lazer cartoon. (Samberg also lends his voice to the series.)

KISS Star In Halloween Scooby-Doo Movie Out This Summer For Some Reason

KISS will be appearing in animated form alongside the Scooby-Doo crew in the new film Scooby-Doo! And KISS: Rock & Roll Mystery. Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Eric Singer, and Tommy Thayer will all voice themselves, alongside a guest cast that includes Darius Rucker, Kevin Smith, and Jason Mewes. The film will take place at a KISS amusement park called KISS World, where the band will perform a Halloween concert and team up with the detectives to investigate some spooky circumstances that are happening on the park grounds. The film will also feature a new original KISS song made specifically for the movie. Watch a ridiculous trailer for the new film below. 

Watch The Series Premiere Of Diplo’s Animated TV Show Major Lazer

Diplo’s Major Lazer animated series has been in the works for a long time — they were obviously fixated on ’80s cartoons since the release of their first album back in 2009 — and it finally premiered on FXX’s Animation Domination block on Thursday night. They also debuted a new song, “Night Riders,” in celebration of the premiere. As we found out earlier this month, J.K. Simmons, Ezra Koenig, Charli XCX, Riff Raff, Andy Samberg, and Aziz Ansari will all make guest appearances sometime this season.

Deerhoof - “Tiny Bubbles” (Official Video)

Ever-prolific noise-gauze purveyors Deerhoof released their 12th full-length album, La Isla Bonita (Stream), late last year and have continued to release accompanying visuals for various tracks from that record. In January we got Satomi Matsuzak strolling around the British shoreline in the “Black Pitch” video, but the animated visuals for “Tiny Bubbles” that came out today reach a much deeper emotional level for the band. At least for drummer Greg Saunier, who spoke at length with Mashable about the video, and how the animator connected to his vision of the song in an uncanny way:

It was a friend of Joyful Noise that got in touch with them and said he wanted to make a video, and the role that I played in this video was not to say no. I did not prevent this friend of Joyful Noise from making the video — I didn’t have any idea what it would be. I didn’t know the person — I still don’t. Never met them. So when this animated video arrived suddenly one day in my inbox and I watched this thing, I feel that the animator has not only understood the song and the words, but to a level that felt uncanny — you know sometimes you have that feeling where it’s like you meet someone and you’ve known them your whole life. And this kinda felt like that — like he seemed to nail the ethos of what we wanted to do with that song and with the whole record to such a T that it was like — sometimes it’s like an out-of-body experience.

If that’s not a good reason to watch a video, I don’t know what is. Although Saunier wasn’t sure of the creator, Geoff Hoskinson directed and animated the poignant, capitalism-condemning clip.

Kathryn Calder - “Take A Little Time” (Official Video)

The concept of time gracefully underscores Kathryn Calder’s solo work. The New Pornographer and former Immaculate Machine frontwoman is working on her kickstarter-funded documentary, A Matter of Time, about the process of recording her first solo album while caring for her dying mother. The new video for “Take A Little Time,” from her eponymous third album is a more lighthearted meditation on temporality — how it can inspire, terrify, and ultimately heal you. She outruns a horde of floating, illustrated monsters before finally reaching the moment of divine inspiration. Watch the video and check out her tour dates below.

The Darkness - “Barbarian” (Official Video)

Depending on how you view these things, the Darkness arrived either two decades too late or a decade-or-so too early. The band’s great first album, Permission To Land, came out in 2003: If it had come out in 1983, it would have been right at home alongside releases by bands like Judas Priest, the Scorpions, and AC/DC. If the Darkness were an emerging artist this year, they’d be part of a trad-metal revival that includes everything from Ranger to Enforcer to Crypt Sermon. The Darkness’ stock would be especially high right now due to the fact that the band’s frontman, Justin Hawkins, had co-written one of the best songs on Weezer’s 2014 comeback, Everything Will Be Alright In The End (said song being “I’ve Had It Up To Here”). So it’s an apt moment for the Darkness to return with a new album, their fourth, following 2012’s underrated Hot Cakes. The new LP will be called Last Of Our Kind and it’s preceded today by the lead single, “Barbarian.” I want to love this because I honestly love all three Darkness albums, but to my ear, “Barbarian” is a pretty weak song by Darkness standards, and the idea that the Darkness are the “last of their kind” is a fallacy: Right now, there are more bands playing in this style than there have been since the mid-’80s. That said, I would be pretty damn surprised if the new record didn’t contain a few bangers, and maybe “Barbarian” is better than I’m giving it credit for. Panda Bear - “Boys Latin” (Official Video)

Panda Bear premiered a video for a new Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper track called “Boys Latin” on Adult Swim early this morning. The animated video follows around a lanky boy as he explores a shimmering swampy landscape and interacts with a magical plant that causes him to grow some colorful appendages. He meets up with a few other boys who follow him along on his journey. The song gets its name from a high-class Catholic prep school located in Baltimore. The visuals were directed by Isaiah Saxon and Sean Hellfritsch from Encyclopedia Pictura, who have also worked on videos from Björk, Grizzly Bear, and Metronomy in the past.

South Park closed out its 18th season with a slew of musical “guest stars” that have generated a lot of criticism and discussion this year. There’s a hologram of Kurt Cobain, performances from Taylor Swift and Iggy Azalea, and Stan’s dad resurfaces as Lorde, again. There are several duets throughout — Azalea performs “A Holly Jolly Christmas” alongside an Elvis hologram, and Swift is faced with the obscenely uncomfortable task of singing “Baby It’s Cold Outside” with Bill Cosby. Field Report - “Wings” (Official Video)

The first song we heard from Field Report’s Marigolden (Stream) was “Wings,” which I described as “a midnight-black digi-folk tune in which synthesizers sound like blinding lights.” Back then, Chris Porterfield told us the song “uses altitude as a metaphor for strength of belief in a reckless higher pursuit,” and indeed, Blackbox Visual’s animated video traces a risky expedition into outer space. It looks as hauntingly pretty as the song sounds.

Chvrches - "Under the Tide" (Official Video)

Chvrches have shared the video for "Under the Tide", taken from their excellent debut The Bones of What You Believe. Directed by Sing J. Lee, it's a trippy space journey featuring Martin Doherty singing in between anime footage.

Nude Beach - “For You” (Official Video)

Ryan Naideau, drummer for the extremely likable Brooklyn power-pop trio Nude Beach, used to work at the Children’s Museum Of The Arts’ summer camp in New York. And in making the video for “For You,” a beaming song from the band’s forthcoming double album 77, he and his band returned to his old place of employment. The kids at the camp put together the song’s video, animating some drawings and building the sets and presumably writing the story, in which the band travels through space to visit a Doggy Nightclub.

SBTRKT - “New Dorp. New York” (Feat. Ezra Koenig) (Official Video)

“New Dorp. New York” is the first single from Wonder Where We Land, the new album from the masked British producer SBTRKT, and it’s one of the strangest first singles from an anticipated album in recent memory. It’s a shuffly, skittering thumper that has Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig half-scatting nonsense about New York, and there’s a good chance you either really like it or are completely baffled by it. You will probably feel the same way about the song’s brand-new computer-animated video. The opening seconds of director Fons Schiedon’s clip show a praying mantis, in silhouette, devouring a beetle. It goes on to show a mammalian predator stalking dark city streets, doing predatory things, its presence and actions basically unexplained.

Robert Scott - “Vertigo” (Official Video)

Robert Scott logged time in two of New Zealand’s greatest, most influential bands, the Bats and the Clean. He just released a new solo album called The Green House, and today he unveils the colorful cartoon video for “Vertigo,” one of the intimate album’s most upbeat tracks. Director Katie Brockie’s highly entertaining clip tracks the fearful exploits of three wide-eyed characters in what appears to be a mountainous, monster-infested ice world. Max Howard-Martens did some wonderful animation here, and Scott’s song is maximal power-pop done right.
