Sufjan Stevens – “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”

Sufjan Stevens’s holiday-themed EP box set Silver & Gold: Songs For Christmas comes out today, and he’s already made two very, very different videos for songs from the EP: The splattery satire of “Mr. Frosty Man” and the familial warmth of “Silver & Gold.” Now, in the new video for his impressionistic version of the standard “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” Sufjan goes a third way: Lynchian dread! The video follows a little girl running in slow-motion Christmas-morning glee through a house where creepy and cryptic but seasonally appropriate things are going down. Aaron + Alex Craig direct.

Lotus Plaza – “Black Buzz”

Earlier this year, Lotus Plaza, better known as Deerhunter secret weapon Lockett Pundt, released his Spooky Action At A Distance album. And now here’s the video for the hazy, “Black Buzz,” a gorgeously shot slow-motion character study about a girl who leaves behind a squalid, disgusting existence and wills herself toward a sort of transcendent tranquility. Best Coast - Gone Again

Shot entirely in slow motion, the video for “Gone Again” starts out pretty ominous. Women dressed in green khaki jumpsuits and kitty-cat face masks bearing rifles on a cloudy, gray day doesn’t send many happy messages, unless the feline apparel makes up for any sense of impending doom. However, the ammunition is the kicker in what otherwise would have been an aching pace towards homicide. Instead of painful bullets, the weapons fire- but wait, you don’t want me to ruin the ending, do you?

DiRT 3 - Trailer

This is the Marketing Trailer we produced at RealtimeUK for the new "DiRT 3" game from Codemasters.

The movie is one continuous piece of car physics, on one continuous camera.

It was a challenge producing an animatic that was hand animated and trying to conform physics to those cameras and timings. We ended up having to increase the timings on some sections and shorten them on others, as the car physics ran at different speeds to the animatic.

The other challenge was getting all of the environments to seamlessly match up using the same car pass and cameras.

The job was completed using 3dsmax and Vray, then composited in AfterFX.

On and off, it took about 6 Artists approximately 3months to complete.

I was the Lead Artist on the job. I produced some of the animatic, cleaned and animated the car physics (supplied by codemasters), and completed the lighting, compositing and rendering for the movie.

Couple years ago, it seemed everyone and their mother was shooting with a Phantom camera, capturing life’s minutiae in ultra slow-motion. While the results were often beautiful, without any genuine motivation, the practice felt empty. And so it passed.

But when slow motion cinematography has a point—ah, that’s something different, isn’t it?

I submit exhibit A, “Nuit Blance,” a short film directed by Spy Films‘ Arev Manoukian. Set in a film noir Paris, the film captures a surprisingly violent moment of connection between two strangers attracted to each other with such magnetism that neither panes of glass nor speeding vehicles can keep them apart.

The entire film is told in slow-motion, with sculptural explosions of glass and water enshrining the two would-be lovers like heavenly gossamer. The elongated seconds echo the longing each character feels for the other, and time itself seems to be an expression of their aching desires.
