Director Jamie Caliri Conjures Up an Animation for the Indie Rockers

Three sinister gentlemen, a magician and an enormous rabbit populate the fantastical landscape of Emmy-winning director Jamie Caliri’s video for “The Rifle’s Spiral,” a new track by Portland-based indie rock heavyweights The Shins. Sketching the short’s narrative from any lyrics that grabbed his attention, Caliri had free rein to let his imagination run wild, resulting in a surreal stop-motion animation. “I have always loved Edward Gorey’s illustration work and his influence is apparent throughout the video,” says Caliri. “Also, seeing Martin Scorsese’s Hugo three times subconsciously veered my thoughts onto the magic theme.” Founded in 1996 by singer-songwriter James Mercer, The Shins played Coachella Festival last weekend as part of a US tour in support of their grandiose fourth album, Port of Morrow. Featuring guest appearances from Modest Mouse drummer Joe Plummer and Wild Flag’s Janet Weiss, Port of Morrow took five years in the making after Mercer put the group on hiatus to become a father. Enthusing about the current renaissance in music videos after also making a 3D version of the film exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS, Caliri observes: “It's now more like the years before MTV, when music videos did not have a formula. You can be expressive and idiosyncratic.”

Live Action Mega Man X Vs. Protoman Fan Film

This slick looking Megan Man X fan film was brought to life by Olan Rogers, who spent a mere $700 on the entire production. The costumes alone look like they cost more than seven hundred bucks, and yet the average budget of B-movies like Sharktopus is well over a million dollars.

Take note, budding filmmakers-it’s not the size of your budget that counts, it’s how you use it.

100 Years of ships

Ben Schmidt took data from ship’s logs to make a visualization of ocean traffic between 1750 and 1850. It is not meant to be comprehensive, as logs from many nations are not represented, and traffic on the Pacific is lost due to the orientation of the globe. But it’s still an interesting way to see how world exploration and trade progressed through the period. Schmidt also made another video showing just one year of traffic in more detail. Miniature Tigers – “Sex on the Regular” (NSFW)

Dance-pop, ’80s artwork, and telekinesis at last come together in Miniature Tigers’ music video for “Sex on the Regular”. In the Max Goldblatt-directed clip, a man uses his vast mind powers to draw brightly-colored, post-modern portraits (not to mention your standard, run-of-the-mill singing vagina). The only downside to this feast of bubbly synths and rainbow hues is the lack of a Scanners-inspired exploding head as the piece de resistance. Watch the video below (via IFC.com).
