“Old hat” is something people say when they’re unimpressed. My sister
jokingly says it to dub something woefully out of touch or too familiar
to matter. In fact, on “Old Hat,”
Van Hunt carries that timeless air of self-possession that only some
old funk and jazz ever really achieves. I doubt Van Hunt cares if he
looks hip or current in the video — this is a guy who’s worked alongside
iconic artists like Mary J. Blige and The Roots — but the opportunity
to play off the phrase was clearly too tempting. The simple,
tongue-in-cheek visuals complement the song’s understated, playful
insouciance perfectly.
