Sucker Punch: Trailer 3

Watch the third trailer for Sucker Punch, in theaters March 25, 2011.

With ‘Sucker Punch’ almost imminent, a new trailer has just been released. If you’re looking forward to the film, then it isn’t going to taper your enthusiasm. Likewise, if you think ‘Sucker Punch’ looks a juvenile pile of hokum, then it certainly won’t sway you to think otherwise. Me, I’m trying to keep an open mind. I’m not a fan of director Zach Snyder’s previous work but there were a few moments in ‘Watchmen’ which suggested there might be a real filmmaker in him somewhere; behind all the slo-mo and muscles.

Peter, Bjorn and John – “Second Chance” Video

Peter Bjorn & John’s “Second Chance” clip is the next logical step from their “Breaker Breaker” video. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s the next thing they shot: You’ll see the same set, the same black background, but different outfits and a lot more mess in this one — if you’ve got OCD you’ll enjoy watching this one until the end. Don’t be surprised if clips emerge for every single song on their upcoming album Gimme Some, because I think we’ll be getting a lot more.

Yeasayer - “I Remember”

Yeasayer trotted out Odd Blood’s “I Remember” on Valentine’s Day for obvious reasons. Sophia Peer’s suitably romantic video for the track melds Lionel Ritchie’s “Hello,” a Toro Y Moi smoke-out, and Vincent Gallo’s The Brown Bunny.

Watch Cults Video Starring James Franco’s Bro

This video stars James Franco’s younger brother Dave Franco, and Julia Roberts’s niece Emma Roberts. I’m not 100% sure the “Dave Franco” part is correct though. I suspect it’s actually James Franco in a Dave Franco suit, trying to put more projects on his CV. It’s a cute video, with Roberts playing a Brigitte Bardot character come to life. Don’t get too attached to this one — the band Tweeted that it’s not their official video, but an MTV project (LCD’s “Pow Pow” was part of the same series). They promise an official video out soon.

The “Go Outside” 7-inch is out now. This video was directed by Patrick Hoelck.

Kanye West - All Of The Lights ft. Rihanna, Kid Cudi

And here's the eyeball-blazing visual for Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy single "All of the Lights". The Hype Williams-directed clip features appearances by Rihanna and Kid Cudi, along with many neon-light effects, and a memorable shot of Kanye emoting from atop a police car.

UPDATE: As many smart people have pointed out, the video's spazzy title cards are strongly inspired by the opening of French director Gaspar Noé 2009 film Enter the Void.

"All Of The Lights" by Kanye West feat. Rihanna and Kid Cudi with vocals by Fergie, Charlie Wilson, John Legend, Tony Williams, Alicia Keys, La Roux, The Dream, Ryan Leslie, Alvin Fields and Ken Lewis. Directed by Hype Williams.

Radiohead – “Lotus Flower” Music Video

This simple grayscale clip for “Lotus Flower” appeared today, the first from their King Of Limbs LP, and I’m excited by this release of new Thom Yorke dance moves almost as much as I am by the release of new Radiohead music. It features Yorke dancing alone, in black and white, and in garb similar to their press photo. Judging by the moves, stretches, and balances it looks like Yorke’s been doing Bikram yoga and some cross training. He looks very fit (especially for a 150 year old man). The video was directed by Garth Jennings (Blur’s “Coffee & TV,” The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy), with choreography (!) by Wayne McGregor.

NewVillager – “LightHouse”

NewVillager - "LightHouse" from stereogum on Vimeo.

NewVillager is a Brooklyn-based artist collective (via San Fransisco) founded by Ben Bromley and Ross Simonini. They produce “… drawings, photographs, film, and installations,” according to their bio. Music is another part of their work, but it’s a huge and very strong part, going by “LightHouse.” I love how the deep-voiced chorus contrasts with the lightness of the strings and reversed samples; the effect’s joyous, soulful. Their bio mentions that they recorded each song on their upcoming debut 10 times, with different choruses, melodies, etc. So perhaps this is the result of combining different versions? I think you can hear it when the other vocal elements and instruments dip in and out of the song.

The accompanying video adds another lovely dimension. The costumes here show a lot of creativity with a limited budget. They look great, first of all, but the pieces that make up the costume (brooms, tote bags, dusters, pill bottles, funnels) transform, as does the costumed actor — they don’t look like they’re costumes so much as an organic extension of the character. The pieces and colors made me think of Matthew Barney and Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Katamari Damacy, too. It’s giddy, gorgeous work. The video was directed by Ben Dickinson.

Cut Copy - Need You Now

A couple weeks ago we brought you “Need You Now,” another nice taste from Zonoscope and the first track on the album. I appreciated the way the song subtly gained more energy as it went on. The video does something similar, building hilarity and weirdness as it heads towards its illogical conclusion. I don’t want to give away what build entails, but I do want to mention that this video also contains a small love story, and plenty of moving portraits that remind me of many awkward senior class photos. The video was directed by Keith Schofield, who’s also done clips for Charlotte Gainsbourg and Beck, and Chromeo, among others.

The infamous Animation Workshop hit hard this time, churning out a really impressive production, which is way ahead of what you’d expect from a student film. Granted, they had a pretty reasonably sized team, and from what you can see, all of them were apparently crazy talented. Now go and enjoy the Backwater Gospel – also make sure to check out their extensive blog with progress elements and making of snippets.

Foo Fighters – “White Limo” Video (Feat. Lemmy)

Foo Fighters playful video for the punked-up “White Limo” stars Lemmy and plenty of Hulk Hogan-esque acting from the band (see above). As far as the aesthetic, it’s fitting Grohl’s wearing a COPS shirt.

The Kills - Satellite

In the video for 'Satellite', the new single by The Kills, Alison and Jamie hop into a vintage Rolls Royce and embark upon a road trip headed towards the faded, washed out glamour of the English coast. Vehicle collisions, dual personalities, and even a spot of fish and chips feature in this subtly disorientating, noir clip.

TOYLAND (English Subtitles)

1942: what happens when a German kid believes that his Jewish neighbors are going to Toyland? A beautiful and moving story about lies and guilt. SFJFF is proud to present the 2009 Academy Award Winner for Best Live Action Short Film as our free online short for the month of February. Directed by Jochen Alexander Freydank.

Recent Short Film (Live-Action) Oscar-winner Toyland (Spielzeugland) is available for free viewing on YouTube during the month of February thanks to a cool and unique promotional gesture from the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival.
A young German boy is hurt when he finds out that his best friend will be leaving soon “to go on a trip”. His mother, in order to hide the truth tells him that his friend and parents are going to “Toyland”.
Shorts International has, for the last several years, gobbled up the rights to all Oscar-nominated short films—packaging them in their successful DVD collections and placing them for individual sale in Apple’s iTunes store. So, while they’ve been available, it’s a rare treat that a film like 2009 winner Toyland (Spielzeugland) is available on YouTube even for a limited period—just in time for this year’s Academy Awards!

This 14min German film treads well-worn territory at this point—adults trying to protect innocent youngsters from a true understanding of the horrors of the Holocaust. However when done well these stories still possess an unmatched power to move an audience.

And no bones about it, Toyland certainly is very well done. It has everything you want from a prestige short film production: wonderful acting, authentic set/costume design, and professional level cinematography complete with several interesting shots. But more impressively even than that is how director Jochen Alexander Freydank faciley tells his story in two timelines; background details emerge simultaneously with present action. It can be confusing at first, but it results in a big payoff at the end. A truly wonderful film.

Lovett - “Eye Of The Storm”

If you think music videos have become cheaper looking because of how most are viewed these days, think again. This is a very cinematic video from Ben Lovett, and maybe that has to do with his work on a number of soundtracks over the years. Or maybe not. Nonetheless, it’s an incredible looking video that was directed by Christopher Alender, and hopefully will get attention on beautiful visuals alone.

The song will be released on Lovett’s Highway Collection album, due out March 15th. You can find out more about Lovett and the forthcoming album by heading to LoversLabel.com.

Echo Lake - Young Silence

Here’s the new video for the title track from Echo Lake’s forthcoming Young Silence 12″ EP, which drops on Valentine’s Day on No Pain In Pop. Sort of like a low-budget — and cooler looking — version of Radiohead’s “House of Cards” video, but instead of lasers, these ghostly apparitions were rendered with nothing but a Kinect and some custom software by Daniel Nixon of XXJFG fame. Dan says:

“As far as I know (and I’m scared of checking) this is the first music video to be made with the Microsoft Kinect camera. The footage was shot on that piece of £130 equipment and recorded to custom software running on a laptop. The depth data was then manipulated to get the whole band in one ’space’ and then the fun started.

Or alternatively: hi-tech D.I.Y.”
Echo Lake’s Young Silence 12″ EP is out February 14 on No Pain In Pop.

R.E.M. - "Mine Smell Like Honey"

Directed by Dominic DeJoseph. Mine Smell Like Honey is the US single from R.E.M.'s upcoming record "Collapse Into Now", out March 7/8th worldwide.

R.E.M. are back in a month (March 7th) with their fifteenth studio album 'Collapse Into Now', a Jacknife Lee-produced effort that was recorded in Berlin, Nashville and New Orleans. It's a collaborator-packed affair, with Eddie Vedder, Peaches, Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye among the guests.

According to Spin, the band wanted to create a "more expansive" album after 2008's finely-tuned 'Accelerate', although this first track out the traps is a pretty concise and raucous affair, packing in a classic harmonised R.E.M. chorus. What, exactly, smell like honey though we can only guess. Here's Michael Stipe getting rolled up a staircase.

What do you think of the track and video?

'Mine Smell Like Honey' is taken from the forthcoming LP 'Collapse Into Now'. Both are released on March 7th, with the single backed by another album track 'Überlin'.
