Jane’s Addiction – “End To The Lies” (NSFW)

As they gear up for the September release of their fourth album The Great Escape Artist — their first in five years — Jane's Addiction have released a video for their hot comeback single "End to the Lies" — a visually-arresting, graphic-novel-inspired, sort-of-NSFW clip, which you can watch here.

ShadowMachine Films, the masterminds behind Cartoon Network's Robot Chicken, produced the video, and the team turns singer Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, and drummer Stephen Perkins into black-and-white caricatures that wouldn't be out of place in a Frank Miller cartoon. (Sadly, Dave Sitek, who's featured on Jane's new album, doesn't appear.) Still, ShadowMachine adds an extra dose of heat by using a woman's naked body as a tableau for stop-animation images of trees, butterflies, and rats.

JUSTICE - CIVILIZATION

Despite his hectic commercial career, Edouard Salier always seems to find the time for passion projects (see Massive Attack’s ‘Atlas Air‘ and ‘Splitting the Atom‘ as some recent examples) that are delivered with the same scope and precision as his more healthily funded films.

This piece is, what is evolving to be, classic Salier. Abstract, iconic and visually reduced narratives balanced with lush, textural details that tackle tales of mythic proportion. Take a few minutes out from your Friday to take a journey through the history of civilization as realized via Edouard and a pack of wild Buffalo.

Bohemian Thought- Revolution Within

Wellington based spoken word artist Bohemian Thought releases the second single, ‘Revolution Within’ from his forthcoming debut full length album ‘Magnificent Dyslexic’.

Through his music Bohemian Thought aims to inspire understanding and acceptance and this second single ‘Revolution Within’ certainly holds true to that mantra. Featuring the beautifully haunting strings of London’s Urban Soul Orchestra and the lovely Lisa Tomlins, Bohemian speaks out against ignorance and indifference and calls upon the individual to reach within to bring about change and peace.

“Revolution Within’ was partly inspired by the Last Poets and Gil Scott Heron and in response to the classic track 'The Revolution Shall Not Be Televised'. This track talks about finding freedom from the man but to find freedom from the man we have to find the freedom within - a conscious revolution. ” says Bohemian

A spoken word poet, singer, songwriter and percussionist (aka poetic philosopher) Bohemian connected with the local Wellington soul, funk, jazz and reggae scenes. After stints spent jamming with Batucada, Sam Manzanza & the Rhythm Africa Band and Olmecha Supreme, Bohemian Thought arrived at a space to develop his own songs with the assistance of Auckland producer Brofessional, The Urban Soul Orchestra (UK), studio engineer Benny Tones and a host of accomplished local musicians.

Grimes – “Crystal Ball”

That Darkbloom split’s great, though Grimes’ side tends to overpower her Montreal cohort d’Eon’s half. It’s not your fault d’Eon: When we posted Laurel Halo’s remix of “Heartbeats,” I mentioned Claire Boucher was taking Grimes to the next level with newer pop-starred tracks like “Vanessa” (and a tour with Lykke Li, etc.). You’ll get a sense of the shift via this wintry Tim Kelly-directed “Crystal Ball” video. Visually, the clip evokes Björk and Karin Dreijer Andersson, but Boucher, clearly an artist to watch, has her own thing going.

Blondie - "Mother" (Official Video)

Blondie’s prepping Panic of Girls, the band’s ninth studio album, as the press release reminds us. Of course that fact is worth mentioning, as is the fact that it’s been eight years since their last studio LP. Band members and sonic references have changed since then: Among the album’s tracks is a cover of Beirut’s “Sunday Smile.”
Beirut’s Zach Condon also plays trumpet on “Work Off My Sweat.” For reference, Condon was negative eight years old when the band released Parallel Lines in 1978, and was only 16 the last time they released a record. You can check out the video for first single “Mother” below. The Laurent Rejto-directed clip has lots of references to the gritty New York that Blondie grew up in — keep an eye out for many downtown characters, security cameras in dirty bathrooms, and zombies.

Elbow - Open arms

Followers of Elbow will know of the band’s love of illustrator Oliver East’s idiosyncratic work – his illustrations grace the covers of every one of their releases since 2008. And now Oliver has now teamed up with Trunk Animation to create a new video for Elbow’s Open Arms.

The track celebrates lead singer Guy Garvey’s local parish hall – location of many Garvey/Elbow celebrations – and Trunk’s animators and compositors, led by directors Grigoris Leontiades and Layla Atkinson, spent five weeks and a couple of late nights creating the distinctive video from Oliver’s original storyboards.

An earthbound loose narrative soon takes flight into imagination – giving full vent to Oliver’s drawing style – as ribbons reminiscent of a zoetrope that wind around the characters in the video. Ranges of textures were created to capture the delicacy of Oliver’s pen washes, and Trunk’s ace compositor Steven Azancot used Cinema 4D to create 3D ribbons that were placed into the 2D space.

As with the entire video, the ribbons were animated at 8 frames a second to give it a very hand-drawn feel. In short, a fine, lyrical addition to Trunk’s catalogue of videos for British indie bands, including Hot Chip and Magic Numbers.

ROME – “3 Dreams Of Black” (Dir. Chris Milk)

ROME: "WebGL: The Technology Behind '3 Dreams of Black'"

Remember Arcade Fire’s interactive video for “We Used to Wait”? Well, Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi took a similar approach for “3 Dreams of Black” from their collaborative album, Rome. The interactive video was directed by Chris Milk and created by the smarty pants at Google using Google Chrome’s WebGL technology. Consequently, you’ll need Google Chrome to view it… or navigate through the three dream worlds that color the clip.

As an issued press release explains, “The worlds are experienced as 2D drawings and animations, interspersed with interactive 3D sequences in which the viewer becomes an active participant, guiding their own journey through the unfolding narrative. Participants can even create their own virtual artifacts — the best of which will then be integrated into the experience and become a part of other users’ dreams.” In other words, click here and have fun.

Buraka Som Sistema - 'Hangover (BaBaBa)'

Hangover (Bababa) Co-Produced by Buraka Som Sistema & Stereotyp.
Video Directed by João Pedro Moreira & Carlos Afonso.

'Hangover (BaBaBa)' is out on June 6th on Enchufada including remixes from Tony Senghore, Swick and Oui' Wack.

The track's maddeningly catchy 'BaBaBa' hook originated when the group were in Rangel 'City' in Luanda, Angola, visiting some of their favourite Kuduro producers including DJ Znobia. As Buraka's Kalaf Ângelo remembers, "He played us one of his tracks featuring Nacobeta, a local MC, where he used this hook and it immediately got our attention! We then used it in some of our early shows and the crowd loved it because of its simplicity and raw energy. While working on the new album, the beat we produced with Stereotyp had that same energy so it made perfect sense to bring it back for the chorus and close the cycle."

R.E.M. - Discoverer

Michael Stipe and His Sister Lynda On Their Cinematic Collaboration For Collapse Into Now

Directed by Michael Stipe and his sister Lynda, today's premiere of the music video for R.E.M.’s "Discoverer" accompanies the first track off the group's 15th studio album, Collapse Into Now. Alongside the record, which has been hailed as their best in a decade, the band’s cerebral frontman commissioned a film for each of the 12 tracks from the likes of James Franco, Sam Taylor-Wood, Sophie Calle, and Albert Maysles. Stipe opted to direct "Discoverer" himself, citing a personal attachment to the tune, which posits New York as his muse. "It's autobiographic," he says. "I rarely insert myself this directly into a song." Lynda's inventive use of the computer program AutoCAD (a tool for architectural layouts) for projections during live performances with her experimental band, Flash to Bang Time, served as a jumping off point. "It's like the Velvet Underground circa 1969, with the Exploding Plastic Inevitable, when they were working alongside Andy Warhol in the Factory,” Stipe says of the color-drenched effect.

Robert Johnson: Devilish Detail

Illustrator Christopher Darling Brings the Myth of the Legendary Blues Musician to Life

Today's premiere commemorates the 100th birthday of late bluesman Robert Johnson. The film, which features illustrations from Brooklyn artist Christopher Darling, centers on the urban myth of the singer-guitarist selling his soul to the devil, a tale fueled by his itinerant lifestyle, otherworldly talent and renowned prowess as a ladies' man. In celebration of the May 8 anniversary, Sony has released a new box set of Johnson's late 1930s recordings, The Complete Original Masters: Centennial Edition, which includes a double-disc CD, a DVD of the 1997 documentary The Life and Music of Robert Johnson: Can't You Hear the Wind Howl? and 12 vinyl reproductions of his original records. Johnson died tragically young at the age of 27, allegedly poisoned by a jealous lover. He was famous for his unusually long fingers, with which he nimbly performed complex compositions. "Bryan Jones first played these records for Keith Richards in the early 60s, and Richards said, 'But who's the other guy playing?' And the answer was, 'It's just one guy!'" says multi-Grammy-winning producer Steve Berkowitz, who helped to mastermind the project. Berkowitz compiled his top-ten list of blues talent from Johnson's era below.

"Blind" Willie Johnson
His best songs are "If I Had My Way I Would Tear This Building Down," and "God Moves On the Water." It's gospel music, but it's all blues and otherworldly. He was a guitarist and also sang with his wife; it's just the deepest, scariest most wonderful, uplifting, reverential music.

Louise Johnson
There are only four songs of hers ever known—all spectacular. No one knows much about her, other than she recorded with Son House and Charlie Patton. There's a story about a car ride from Memphis to Wisconsin: she was Patton's girlfriend, but they were in the same car as Son House, and by the time they arrived she was Son House’s girlfriend. Something was going on in the back seat!

Lonnie Johnson
He did one of the first guitar solos ever with Louis Armstrong, and is one of the greatest players that ever lived. I love his version of "September Song," which is right at the end of his life, on an album you can't really find anymore called The Living Room Sessions.

Leroy Carr
Carr is a piano player who was a great influence on, among other people, Ray Charles. He unfortunately drank himself to death, after recording hundreds of songs. The last he recorded was "Six Cold Feet in the Ground." And then he died!

Scrapper Blackwell
There weren't that many solo guitar players in a group context. Scrapper's one of them. Scrapper Blackwell and Lonnie Johnson are two of the most seminal early guitar players, which extends from blues to jazz to country, to bluegrass to rock and roll and R&B, and forward. Listen to any of the songs he played with Leroy Carr.

Blind Willie McTell
A terrific songwriter. I love "It's Your Time To Worry." Bob Dylan wrote a very beautiful song called "Blind Willie McTell."

The Mississippi Sheiks
The supergroup of the blues. Their song "Sitting On Top of the World" has been copied by everybody. They're at a crossroads of blues, jazz, folk, ragtime and bluegrass.

Tampa Red
One of the earliest on the scene in Chicago. He was a guitar player and a singer, idolized by Muddy Waters and a lot of the then-younger Chicago blues musicians who had moved up from the South. His song "You've Got To Love Her With a Feeling" is wonderful. He also had a band and went electric pretty early.

Big Maceo Merriweather
He sings one my favorite songs of all time, which is called the "Poor Kelly Blues." Big Maceo was an original, and the most important piano player in Chicago.

Little Walter
The Jimi Hendrix of harmonica, a beautiful singer and writer. At first he was in Muddy Waters's band, and then he left and had his own hits. He had a short, tragic, alcohol-filled life. "Can't Hold Out Much Longer," "You Better Watch Yourself," and "Blues With A Feeling" are some of my faves.

Holy Ghost! - Wait & See

Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser’s simple, catchy “Wait & See” comes from the NYC duo’s self-titled DFA full-length. The Ben Fries-directed video for the track features their fathers playing Holy Ghost!. As Frankel explains:

For a long time Nick and I joked that our dads should take our press photos. At some point our go-to director, Ben Fries, came up with the idea of actually making a video with them playing us and “Wait and See” seemed like the perfect song to do it for. At first both Dads were a little apprehensive — and rightfully so: My dad was appalled at the sizing options at American Apparel. But when we explained that the joke wasn’t on them — that it was actually kind of making fun of us getting older and still living like teenagers — they were game. For the record, they agree: We need to grow up.”

Bob Dylan - 1966 World Tour: The Home Movies

In 1965, Bob Dylan was the reigning king of the new folk music boom, but while he had earned a large and loyal audience playing earnest and elliptical songs of social protest and romantic puzzlement accompanied by his acoustic guitar, he was eager to strike out into new territory, and he shocked fans at that year's Newport Folk Festival by showing up with an electric guitar and a thrown-together rock & roll band. Later that year, Dylan took his joyous outrage on the road, with a tight, but hard-hitting, rock & roll combo, the Hawks, joining him for a series of shows in which the singer and his band (who would later rename themselves the Band) were often confronted by puzzled and vocally angry crowds. Hawks drummer Levon Helm, unhappy with the unfriendly reception, dropped out after a few dates, and after substitute timekeepers Bobby Gregg and Sandy Konikoff both vacated the drummer's seat, Mickey Jones -- a Texan transplanted to Los Angeles who had enjoyed successful gigs with Trini Lopez and Johnny Rivers -- landed the job of joining Dylan and the Hawks for a tour of Europe. A photography buff, Jones brought his home movie camera along with him, and Bob Dylan: World Tour 1966 -- The Home Movies compiles Jones' amateur footage of life on the road and off-stage with Dylan and the Hawks. In addition, Jones shares his memories of the tour, discusses his career before and after working with Dylan, and offers his own observations on what Dylan's music meant to him and to music fans everywhere. The Home Movies includes no musical performances from Bob Dylan; accompaniment for Jones' silent footage is provided by Highway 61 Revisited, a Bob Dylan tribute band.
