Ultra-pop sprite Carly Rae Jepsen is the sort of singer who’s better
known for her songs — like the sparkling gems on her excellent new album
E•MO•TION
— than for the way she sings them. But give her some credit on the
latter, too. On a recent visit to the BBC’s Live Lounge, Jepsen sang a
song that’s not one of her own: Years & Years’ massive house-pop jam
“King.” And
she gave the song a beautifully vulnerable reading, singing it with only
a keyboardist and an acoustic guitarist backing her up. The original
song is pretty good, and I still like her version better.
