The pro-wrestling clip is practically a music-video subgenre now, and
Wavves’ new video for the fired-up song “Way Too Much” is a fine
addition to it. If you follow Wavves frontman Nathan Williams on
Twitter, then you already know he’s a big wrestling fan. He and director
Jack Wagner filmed the “Way Too Much” video at an event put on by the L.A. indie wrestling promotion Underground Empire.
The wrestling we see in the video is the uncommonly brutal death-match
type, the kind where people get slammed through tables covered in barbed
wire. At the end of the video, we see one wrestler, Max X, getting
thumbtacks pulled out of his head after a match. Wagner films everything
so that it looks mythic and awe-inspiring, rather than tawdry and
gross. (Indie wrestling is all of those things, most of the time.)
