I Got Out Of Bed Today: The Mal Blum Story is the title of
the book that we see Mal Blum reading in the opening few shots of this
new video, and it presents an apt setting through which to experience
“Better Go” for the first time. Blum spews a million anxieties a minute,
pondering an ex-lover’s new life and trying to pinpoint the moment in
time when their relationship started to crumble. This might sound
self-pitying, but Blum is a quick-witted lyricist who can turn wallowing
into an insult with basic turns-of-phrase, like: “I hope your computer
keeps you warm where I could not.” Blum’s fifth full-length album, You Look A Lot Like Me
was produced by Screaming Females’ Marissa Paternoster, who also played
guitar and sang some vocal harmonies on the tracks. Kyle Gilbride of
Swearin’ engineered it, which puts Mal Blum on the impressive list of
albums that he’s had a hand in, alongside Girlpool’s Before The World Was Big, Waxahatchee’s Cerulean Salt, and many, many more.
