“Way Up” is the perfect name for a Popcaan song, because it’s an
approximation of what’s happened to his profile in the US over the
course of the last 18 months or so. The Jamaican singer singlehandedly
smuggled dancehall onto one of the year’s biggest and best songs, Jamie
xx’s “I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times),”
and continues to carve out a space of himself in the upper echelons of
indie, if not the mainstream itself. In lesser hands, “Way Up” wouldn’t
have been able to shrug off its association as a jubilant Drake ad-lib
on “Blessings,”
but Popcaan reclaims it with ease. Essentially it’s a song about
sleeping with women and smoking a lot of weed, but the poetic lilt of
his phrasing makes even a line that should be a clunker sound hilarious,
almost sweet. “Gyal a blow breeze pon the head a mi penis” is part of
the chorus, but hey, somehow he makes it work. RD Studios directed the
video. Watch Popcaan ride four wheelers and smoke blunts.
