Montreal quartet TOPS make the kind of breathy, crystalline pop music
in slow motion. As if to emphasize this, their new video for
“Destination” is willfully slow and blurry, at times it looks more like a
suspended, moving photo than film. I’d call it time lapse, but it isn’t
— just the slow, mundane way that life moves when it’s captured
naturally. Somehow, it comes off as more interesting than any sort of
dramatic production. Elegant snippets of reality, cut and pasted
together in charming disarray — the visual equivalent of raking through a
Zen garden. The entire thing was shot and edited in Japan by Jasper Baydala, who also directed it.
