During many of the recent anti-police brutality protests in places
like Ferguson and Baltimore, Lil Boosie’s 2009 mixtape track “Fuck The Police”
has become a street-level anthem, a thing to chant when you’re facing
down a phalanx of riot cops. Since recording that track, Boosie, who now
uses the name Boosie BadAzz, has served a lengthy prison sentence of
his own, and his forthcoming album Touchdown 2 Cause Hell
includes an explicit protest track called “Hands Up.” The new “Hands Up”
video starts out with images of the recent protests and riots, and then
it goes back in time — to New York, to Ferguson, to all the protests
and killings in years past. It’s a hard video to watch, and it includes
footage of the actual murders of Eric Garner and Walter Scott. Boosie
never appears, and he doesn’t need to; it’s plenty cathartic enough
without him. If you can watch a video like this without feeling
something, I don’t know what to tell you. Child Basquiat put the video
together, and you can watch.
