Host (FKA Ugly Hussy — you can understand the name change) released
his debut album last year, a collection of expansive and studied rock
instrumentals from composer Alex Maddalena. We premiered “Luk,”
and I’ve been revisiting the record pretty often as the weather has
gotten progressively colder and I’ve needed calming instrumental to zone
out to. The video for album opener “Two Lights” captures the
eye-widening wonder that is instilled through Host’s music, directing
our attention towards the stars. It was directed by Maddalena’s cousin
David Feinberg, who has an obsession with old space stuff and uses his
knowledge to great effect for the video. We start out with illustrations
of ancient civilizations looking towards the skies, imagining what
could be, and we’re taken on an abstract journey through the history of
space exploration and our universe. As the song picks up, we flash by
footage of red hot planets, fissures forming out of lava, faraway images
of the universe. It captures both the vast beauty of space and the
insignificance of us in the scheme of it all. It’s a wonderfully
understated video.
