Crooks On Tape — one of Enon/Brainiac schizoid indie-rock OG John
Schmersal’s two current projects along with Vertical Scratchers —
released a very good album called Fingerprint last year. That
album’s opening track, “Duper,” is classic Schmersal, a creepy cartoon
pop song that sounds like the audio equivalent of a blue neon sign at a
skeezy night club. Just in time for Crooks On Tape’s gig tonight in
L.A., “Duper” now has a video by director Paul Cordes Wilm that finds
the band channel-surfing through various sordid programming while
huddled together in bathrobes on hotel bed. Apparently tour manager Bob
Schriner filmed the bathrobe footage last January while the band was
gutting out a tour through the subzero Upper Midwest during the Polar
Vortex.
