The cassette compilation Common Interests Were Not Enough To Keep Us Together showed that the New York indie Godmode is about more than just noise-punk (though it’s still good for that),
and it also introduced the world to Shamir Bailey, a 19-year-old from
Las Vegas who sings disco-house anthem with rare levels of badass
self-assurance. “If It Wasn’t True,” a highlight of the compilation, now
has a video. Shamir shot it himself, grabbing lots of footage of his
friends and his hometown, and editor Antony Sylvester put all sorts of
weird filters on it. It’s an engagingly weird and homemade piece of work
and a chance to discover a truly great song.
