This summer, Dej Loaf recruited fellow Detroit rap star Big Sean for “Back Up,”
a tingly jam that somehow sounds better every time I hear it. And
today, the track gets a video that fits it just perfectly. Dej Loaf and
director Alex Nazari filmed the
clip at Detroit’s Royal Skate Land, a roller rink that was one of Dej
Loaf’s favorite places as a kid. In the video, she and her friends take
it over, and we get to see some of the busy, astounding dances that are
part of Detroit’s culture. In a lot of ways, I think this is what a rap
video should be: An energetic, charismatic image of a place
that rarely gets to celebrate itself onscreen. It would’ve been cooler
if Big Sean had showed up for the video shoot, though, rather than just
sending in his remotely-taped verse. What, your schedule was too busy,
Big Sean?
