Marissa Nadler’s latest album is called July, and wouldn’t
you know it, July starts today. Just in time for Independence Day — and
for the North American tour that begins next week — Nadler has delivered
a video for “Firecrackers,” an eerie old-timey ballad that casts the
fallout from a July 4 breakup in explosive terms. The heavily filtered
clip, directed by Ryan Hamilton Walsh of Boston indie-rockers Hallelujah
The Hills, features Nadler moving backwards through myriad activities
including guitar-smashing and water-splashing. It feels like grainy old
footage from around the time when a song like this would have been a pop
standard.
