Of Montreal - Spiteful Intervention

Here's the trippy, colorful animated clip for Of Montreal's "Spiteful Intervention" from Paralytic Stalks, directed by Jesse Ewles. It features an animated blob which morphs into a variety of shapes, including Kevin Barnes' face. The band also just added several North American tour dates.

The Flaming Lips – “Supermoon Made Me Want To Pee” (Feat. Prefuse 73) (NSFW)

The video shows a totally ridiculous apocalyptic landscape that reminds me of the neighborhood where Charles Bronson moves at the beginning of Death Wish 3. Best character: A giant rat wearing a basketball jersey that says “Shitz” on it. NSFW for caveman-penis reasons. Okayvideo directs.

Zambri - "Hundred Hearts'

A mysterious piece of street art causes onlookers to stop and stare, mesmerized, and then to furiously make out with each other. At first, I was hoping the video wouldn’t show the artwork in question, just to keep the mystery alive. But when it’s revealed, the art is suitably freaky, though it didn’t make me want to make out with anyone.

Death Grips - I've Seen Footage

The out-of-control barrage of photo images is disorienting and relentless enough that you can’t just sit and watch the entire thing end-to-end; you have to turn your head away every once in a while just to keep your bearings. But that perfectly suits the everything-all-the-time mood of the (great) song, and of the band themselves. You shouldn’t feel comfortable watching a Death Grips video.

Liars - No.1 Against The Rush

Todd Cole makes Los Angeles look something like how Nicolas Winding Refn made it look in Drive: A gleaming, pulsating metropolis with an angry heart beating underneath that gorgeous surface. But Drive was seductive, and this video is anything but. In its compulsive, careful kidnapper, we see a force of pure evil, and maybe that’s why the much-bigger Angus Andrew is so totally unable to beat his ass.

Zeus - Are You Gonna' Waste My Time?

When you and your fellow bandmates are made entirely out of food, you shouldn’t encourage hungry canines to come and watch the show, no matter how cute they are.

This awesome music video for Zeus’ Are You Gonna’ Waste My Time? is a delight for both fans of rock and roll and those who enjoy the puppet arts, and it serves as a reminder that the old adage is still true-you are what you eat!

The Simpson Couch Gag By Bill Plympton

In case you missed the latest episode of The Simpsons, here is the only part of the show that really mattered-a strange yet rather touching couch gag by the king of sketchy animated sequences Billy Plympton!

Watch as a bizarro version of Homer struggles with his feelings for both the couch and Marge, with frenetic lines dancing across the screen and an overall style that can only be described as Plymptonian.

The Shins - The Rifle’s Spiral

Director Jamie Caliri Conjures Up an Animation for the Indie Rockers

Three sinister gentlemen, a magician and an enormous rabbit populate the fantastical landscape of Emmy-winning director Jamie Caliri’s video for “The Rifle’s Spiral,” a new track by Portland-based indie rock heavyweights The Shins. Sketching the short’s narrative from any lyrics that grabbed his attention, Caliri had free rein to let his imagination run wild, resulting in a surreal stop-motion animation. “I have always loved Edward Gorey’s illustration work and his influence is apparent throughout the video,” says Caliri. “Also, seeing Martin Scorsese’s Hugo three times subconsciously veered my thoughts onto the magic theme.” Founded in 1996 by singer-songwriter James Mercer, The Shins played Coachella Festival last weekend as part of a US tour in support of their grandiose fourth album, Port of Morrow. Featuring guest appearances from Modest Mouse drummer Joe Plummer and Wild Flag’s Janet Weiss, Port of Morrow took five years in the making after Mercer put the group on hiatus to become a father. Enthusing about the current renaissance in music videos after also making a 3D version of the film exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS, Caliri observes: “It's now more like the years before MTV, when music videos did not have a formula. You can be expressive and idiosyncratic.”

Live Action Mega Man X Vs. Protoman Fan Film

This slick looking Megan Man X fan film was brought to life by Olan Rogers, who spent a mere $700 on the entire production. The costumes alone look like they cost more than seven hundred bucks, and yet the average budget of B-movies like Sharktopus is well over a million dollars.

Take note, budding filmmakers-it’s not the size of your budget that counts, it’s how you use it.

100 Years of ships

Ben Schmidt took data from ship’s logs to make a visualization of ocean traffic between 1750 and 1850. It is not meant to be comprehensive, as logs from many nations are not represented, and traffic on the Pacific is lost due to the orientation of the globe. But it’s still an interesting way to see how world exploration and trade progressed through the period. Schmidt also made another video showing just one year of traffic in more detail. See it and read about how this project was done at Sapping Attention. Link -via Metafilter

In its 74 seconds, OFF!’s new video for the rudimentary hardcore rager “Wiped Out” gives us furious moshpit makeout sessions, painful skateboard accidents, spectacular surfboard falls, circle-pit collisions, cute girls in nerd glasses, police sirens, shotguns, and Keith Morris’s spectacularly ravaged face. It is, um, not boring. Legendary underground filmmaker Richard Kern directs.

Miniature Tigers – “Sex on the Regular” (NSFW)

Dance-pop, ’80s artwork, and telekinesis at last come together in Miniature Tigers’ music video for “Sex on the Regular”. In the Max Goldblatt-directed clip, a man uses his vast mind powers to draw brightly-colored, post-modern portraits (not to mention your standard, run-of-the-mill singing vagina). The only downside to this feast of bubbly synths and rainbow hues is the lack of a Scanners-inspired exploding head as the piece de resistance. Watch the video below (via IFC.com).

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Nerve Damage

I never knew Dr. Manhattan had an angsty purple cousin.

This clip for Unknown Mortal Orchestra's "Nerve Damage", directed by Kamp Grizzly, features skulls, upside-down peace signs, neon-colored veins, and glowing eyeballs.

Regina Spektor - "All The Rowboats"

Adria Petty, the director of this video, also directed the video for Beyonce’s “Countdown”. Although the two musical styles couldn’t be further apart, the two videos do in fact have some similarities, namely the glitchy, slightly frantic vibe they both exude.

Porcelain Raft – “Drifting In and Out”

Usually the phrase “smoke and mirrors” is used to mean a cheap trick or something deceptive. Here, the only thing smoke and mirrors amounts to is a pretty cool looking music video.

Micro Empire

Norah Jones - Happy Pills

Norah Jones’s new Danger Mouse-produced breakup album Little Broken Hearts is imminent, and today we get the video for the chugging first single “Happy Pills.” In the clip, Jones deals conclusively with a philandering boyfriend. If the (beautiful) clothes and car are anything to go on, it’s set in the ’50s for some reason. Isaiah Seret directs.

Van She – “Idea Of Happiness”

Van She – “Idea Of Happiness” (Dir. Andrea Nilsson)

Of the many internet-focused music video directors currently working, Andreas Nilsson has put together one of the strongest overall bodies of work; his Fever Ray clips are total hall-of-fame material. Nilsson’s got a gift for putting together narrative videos in which nothing makes sense and everything seems dangerously off, like something really bad is about to happen. This clip, with its decadently surreal Christmas party, fits in perfectly with his very particular thing.

Tombs - Passageways

Brooklyn's Tombs plays a style of sludge metal distinct in its delivery from any other band around. Likewise, director David Brodsky takes standard notions of a performance video and imbues it with shadows and grit. A perfect pairing.

Rufus Wainwright – “Out Of The Game” Video (Feat. Helena Bonham Carter)

The slick and supple “Out Of The Game” is the title track from Rufus Wainwright’s forthcoming Mark Ronson-produced LP, and accordingly, Rufus has pulled out the stops for its video. Herein you’ll find Tim Burton-muse/showbiz shapeshifter Helena Bonham Carter cast convincingly in the least eccentric role of her lifetime (a frustrated, daydreaming librarian) while Rufus does the bulk of the hamstanding, in triplicate: as a bookish adventure type, a Sonic Youth-loving wastrel, and a past-prime housewife type. The climax has Helena in lingerie, and Rufus’s characters having an orgy with themselves, so if you do decide to press play on this one, you’re advised to take it to the end.

SXSW 2012: Music Videos

Original post : http://motionographer.com By Michelle Higa.

SXSW was a music festival first, so there’s lots of love for the music video format. In addition to the music video screening, this year featured a Have Your Music Videos Critiqued by Andrew WK panel and screenings of the feature-length Girl Walk // All Day Girl Talk music video.

SXSW’s selected music videos featured a mix of techniques and ideas, from men who cry to disco ball-head ballerinas to doing a guitar (that last one is NSFW). Many of the directors were on hand to answer questions after the screening. Most delightful were the anecdotes, like the twenty-four straight hours (and fainting session) required to create Gotye “Somebody That I Used To Know” or the run and gun antics of CHRISTEENE “African Mayonnaise” (“It usually takes security at least three minutes to show up, and the song is three minutes long, so we were able to get what we needed”).

I may sound like a broken record, but I can’t emphasize enough how different it is watching these videos in a theater with a giant screen, powerful sound system, and no distracting laptop or browser windows around. For example, Matt Devine’s Son of Kick “Playing the Villain” was a perfect way to close out the screening. You’re stuck in the dark, a bit exhausted after watching twenty-one videos back to back. The music is LOUD, you have no idea how much time is left in the video, and you’re watching these trapped kids crumble apart with no idea how far it will go. It was brilliant.

The SXSW Best Music Video award went to DANIELS for their escalator ride gone horribly wrong in Battles “My Machine”. The dynamic duo were also in the running for an MTVu Woodie, whose awards ceremony is held in Austin during SXSW. Natasha Pincus’s video for Gotye “Somebody That I Used To Know” was also doubly recognized. Other nominees included Keith Schofield’s Duck Sauce “Big Bad Wolf”, Fleur & Manu’s M83 “Midnight City”, and Kyle Frere’s Major Lazer “Original Don”. The eventual Woodie Winner (and cock blocker of a DANIELS double header) was none other than Drew Barrymore for her celebrity-tastic Warriors-inspired music video for Best Coast “Our Deal”.

Check out all the SXSW Music Videos below. A couple of them are NSFW, and have been marked as such.
