Destroyer – “Savage Night At The Opera”

The clip for Destroyer’s languid Kaputt track “Savage Night At The Opera” follows a golden-hour motorcycle’s-eye-view trip through some urban downtown without breaking its point of view or switching camera angles. It finally comes to rest on a really nice image that I don’t want to spoil. David Galloway directs.

Lana Del Rey - Video Games

Lana Del Rey is the new alias of the pouty-lipped New York singer-songwriter Lizzy Grant, which sadly means she’s no relation to badass female pro wrestler Sara Del Rey. “Video Games,” her forthcoming single, is the sort of languidly sexy orchestral pop that we haven’t heard enough of since Fiona Apple’s been away. The video is a collection of zeigeisty images (TMZ-type drunk-actress shots, skateboarding footage) made to look vintage and washed-out.

Givers - Meantime

Glassnote Records have stayed winning, or at least stayed paid, these past two years on a roll that’s tapped indie’s lucrative side via acts like Phoenix and Mumford & Sons. These are facts that have not hurt Louisiana BTW (and Stereogum40 alum) Givers. The Glassnote rookies hitched their debut to the label and have subsequently found themselves on Fallon and now in possession of two relatively finely produced videos. There was the bright smiles and family friendly psychedelics of “Up Up Up,” and now there is “Meantime,” which stars the band, and child-actor versions of themselves, roaming around campsites until their sunny pop/Dirty Projected jitter climaxes at a glittery, jubilant jam session full of young people who dance around as much as they do.

Back to the Start

Coldplay's haunting classic 'The Scientist' is performed by country music legend Willie Nelson for the soundtrack of the short film entitled, "Back to the Start." The film, by film-maker Johnny Kelly, depicts the life of a farmer as he slowly turns his family farm into an industrial animal factory before seeing the errors of his ways and opting for a more sustainable future. Both the film and the soundtrack were commissioned by Chipotle to emphasize the importance of developing a sustainable food system.

Foo Fighters - Hot Buns (Uncensored Version / NSFW)

When you’re one of the world’s biggest rock bands, you get to do what you want, even if what you want is to advertise your forthcoming North American arena tour with an innuendo-packed, trucker-themed video in which you and your bandmates don ridiculous costumes, proudly bare your asses, and get busy in a truck-stop shower. That’s what the Foo Fighters have done, anyway, and the resulting bit of weirdness is available for your viewing pleasure below. Maybe as a preemptive strike against YouTube’s armies of comments-section monsters, the video is both “fake” and “gay.”

Warning: This video really does include a loving close-up pan across four different bare Foo Fighter asses, so maybe don’t watch it if your boss is standing over your shoulder. Unless, of course, your boss has a Taylor Hawkins fixation.

Rihanna – Cheers (Drink To That)

Real Talk: I’ve been waiting for Rihanna to release “Cheers (Drink To That)” as a single since the first time I heard her 2010 album Loud. The track is a viciously singalongable drinking anthem, and it always needed to be more than a deep cut. Well, the song finally has a video, but that video has its pluses and its minuses. Let’s discuss below.

Plus: The video actually makes it look like fun to be a super-famous globetrotting pop star. Minus: It does so in the form of one of those on-the-road montage videos that pop stars do when they’re too busy or too lazy to make a real video. If the boring-as-hell “California King Bed” deserved its own real video, so did this song. Plus: It was a brilliant idea to release this video on a Friday. Minus: It was not a brilliant idea to release this song on the one Friday this summer when the entire East Coast is planning to spend the whole time attempting to not die in a hurricane. Nobody is looking forward to this weekend, Rihanna. Nobody is drinking to that.

Shout out to the guy who pushes Avril Lavigne into a swimming pool. We’ve all wanted to do that at some point, and you’re living the dream, bud. No shout out to the person responsible for choosing Rihanna’s onstage outfits. What are you doing, that person? You are blowing it!

Beyoncé – “1 + 1″

More than maybe any Beyoncé video since “Crazy In Love,” the new clip for the thunderstruck love-ballad “1 + 1″ is a chance to stare worshipfully at Beyoncé: Beyoncé covered in Goldfinger-looking glitter, Beyoncé rubbing an ice cube on her lihttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifps, Beyoncé slowly putting her face through a waterfall. It’s, um, not subtle. And for those of us who feel a certain way about Beyoncé, it’s not a bad way to start your morning.

But for all its soft-focus imagery, the new video (directed by Beyoncé, Laurent Briet, and Ed Burke) is still the second-best video for the song. The best is an unaccompanied dressing-room rehearsal version of the song, which Jay-Z shot backstage at American Idol earlier this year. More than almost anything she’s done, that rehearsal video gives a good sense of how ridiculously talented this woman is. Watch both videos below.

St. Vincent – “Cruel”

St. Vincent’s forthcoming Strange Mercy is one of the most-anticipated releases of that fall; since totally owning some Big Black covers at the Our Band Could Be Your Life tribute concert, her follow-up to 2009′s Actor has put the increasingly edgy project on many tastemakers’ radars. The especially strong “Surgeon” dropped a little earlier this summer, and now here’s the darkly comic clip for Strange Mercy cut “Cruel.” Ms. Clark describes the experience:

These two days are a bit of a blur, but I know in the midst of things I got dunked in water by a 10-year-old child, watched an amateur pyrotechnics demonstration, had some great laughs with the great girls working in wardrobe, learned how to ballroom dance (sort of), and felt incredibly grateful to be working with such talented and sweet people. The rest of it… well, I’ll just have to watch the video to remember…

Charlotte Gainsbourg – “Terrible Angels”

“Terrible Angels” is the title track from Charlotte Gainsbourg’s forthcoming EP. Beck produced the song just like he produced Gainsbourg’s IRM album, but it’s a straightforwardly glammy dance-pop stomper, and it doesn’t really have any of his fingerprints. It’s basically a toned-down version of a Dr. Luke production, and it’s the last thing I expected to hear from Gainsbourg and Beck. Maybe that’s the point.

For the video, director Nathalie Canguilhem throws the gloriously disheveled Gainsbourg into a parking garage for a choreographed dance routine with an army of lookalikes. Then, something bad happens to Gainsbourg. If you saw Antichrist, you should be used to seeing bad things happen to Charlotte Gainsbourg, but it’s pretty surprising nevertheless. Watch:

Lucinda Williams – “Copenhagen”

In a career that’s already lasted more than 30 years, perennial alt-country shitkicker Lucinda Williams has never released a music video. She finally has one now, and she doesn’t actually appear in the thing. For the song “Copenhagen,” a heartbroken account of the day she learned about the death of her manager, director and Squidbillies co-creator Dave Willis has made a sad animation about a robot-man who can’t die. It’s fun if you think of the video as an extremely precious retelling of Robocop.

Exitmusic – The Hours

EXITMUSIC’s new dreamscape of a music video, “The Hours,” has all sorts of spooky, romantic shit that Northrup Frye would be hyped about. Bleary, stark visions, twins, cascading smoke, spectral textures that gives the slow burn of a song a fitting visual counterpoint. We’re into it, and not just because there’s two Aleksa Palladino’s hanging out. Check out the Will Joines-directed video below, where you can download the track as well.

The Flaming Lips + Lightning Bolt - I'm Working at NASA on Acid

Last month, the Flaming Lips got together with Providence noise kings Lightning Bolt to release a collaborative EP and drop the skree-bomb video for “I Wanna Get High But I Don’t Want Brain Damage.” Now they’ve posted the second video from the EP, and it’s mostly a more straightforward affair. That’s not really saying much, though.

The seven-minute “I’m Working At NASA On Acid” goes from spaghetti-western psych jam to noise freakout and back again. During the psych-rock bits, the video is all expertly edited footage of the bands lip-syncing in a white room with a bunch of balloons in it. But when things turn weird, directors Delo Creative switch to a loving, extended close-up of some dude’s face, blown back by an industrial strength wind machine and covered in what looks like Pepto-Bismol. It’s pretty gross. You’ve been warned.

The Decemberists - Calamity Song

We all know about Trekkies. Or those Star Wars super-fans who go to Comic Con dressed up like Boba Fett. But what about all those Infinite Jest worshipers out there? Who can they turn to for obscure references to David Foster Wallace's magnum opus? Well, The Decemberists, of course.

The new video for "Calamity Song," from The King Is Dead, takes us into the dystopian world of the novel. But not everyone was thrilled about the idea as the concept for a video.

Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy explains:

I wrote "Calamity Song" shortly after I'd finished reading David Foster Wallace's epic Infinite Jest. The book didn't so much inspire the song itself, but Wallace's irreverent and brilliant humor definitely wound its way into the thing. And I had this funny idea that a good video for the song would be a re-creation of the Enfield Tennis Academy's round of Eschaton — basically, a global thermonuclear crisis re-created on a tennis court — that's played about a third of the way into the book. Thankfully, after having a good many people balk at the idea, I found a kindred spirit in Michael Schur, a man with an even greater enthusiasm for Wallace's work than my own. With much adoration and respect to this seminal, genius book, this is what we've come up with. I can only hope DFW would be proud.

Director Michael Schur, co-creator of Parks and Recreation and a veteran of The Office and Saturday Night Live, gave us his side of the story:

The band's manager, Jason, contacted me through his brother Michael (with whom I went to college) and asked me to direct a video they were planning that referenced a section of the book Infinite Jest. The Decemberists are my favorite band, and Infinite Jest is my favorite book. This was tantamount to telling me I had just won two simultaneous Powerball lottery jackpots, on my birthday, which was also Christmas. Thus, my response to him was that, although I was pretty sure this was an elaborate dream I was having, if it were in fact real, then yes, I would be interested. The production team on Parks and Recreation, many of whom are also big fans, volunteered their time and energy, and we shot the whole thing in one day in Portland. Infinite Jest geeks will hopefully enjoy all of the specific references and small details, but we tried to design it so that those with no knowledge of the book at all would be able to understand and enjoy it, as well.

Did they succeed? Let us know in the comments section.

S.C.U.M - Whitechapel

The Post-Punk Band Are Illuminated In a Video Premiere By Tim Noble and Sue Webster

Iconic YBAs Tim Noble and Sue Webster bring their shadowplay to life directing the video for London five-piece S.C.U.M's latest single, “Whitechapel.” Living and working out of their David Adjaye-designed “Dirty House” in Shoreditch, Noble and Webster are lauded for their shadow sculptures––seemingly nondescript piles of rubbish which, when illuminated, transmute into elegant silhouettes of the pair on the wall behind—and affect an anti-art stance in works mixing form and abstraction, male and female, sex and violence, light and shade. For “Whitecapel”, Noble and Webster floodlit S.C.U.M performing their shoegaze pop in a suitably artsy warehouse settling. "It was very interesting to see how the two work together, exchanging ideas," says lead singer Thomas Cohen of the experience. "It felt like being on the set of Screen Tests by Warhol." Named after Valerie Solanas’s feminist manifesto Society for Cutting Up Men, the band are leaving the underground gallery circuit and heading straight for center stage with their debut album Again Into Eyes out in September.

Matt & Kim, Soulja Boy, Andrew W.K. – “I’m A Goner” Video

Soulja Boy, Andrew WK and Matt and Kim have risen from the dead to throw a raging dance party in a morgue. The mortician has left for the night, the limbs are fresh and there's formaldehyde on ice.

In addition to allocating corporate funds to underwrite “I’m A Gonhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifer,” created and produced by Matt & Kim and featuring Andrew W.K. and Souja Boy, Converse gave director Rodney Ascher the means to make it a video. Which means all of the aforementioned principals hung out in an ER smeared in corpse paint for the least metallic clip imaginable involving corpse paint. Watch it at Converse.

The-Dream – “Murderer”

“Murderer”, the new song from airy R&B auteur The-Dream, is a breathy Auto-Tuned reverie, and it doesn’t sound the slightest bit violent, title notwithstanding. The song shows up in Colombiana, the new movie where Zoe Saldana does a whole lot of gun-pointing, and the track’s video doubles as a Colombiana trailer. It even has the green preview screen at the beginning and everything. And even though the song doesn’t come close to fitting the images onscreen, it sort of works; I am going to watch the living shit out of Colombiana.

The New Pornographers Make “Moves” For T-Mobile

Last night while watching something on TV (Stewart or Colbert or Breaking Bad are my only options these days, so one of those) I heard a lady rhapsodizing about T-Mobile’s “best deal ever,” and then heard that sermon paired with an unreasonably catchy jingle that reminded me of the New Pornos’ “Moves.” Turns out it was the New Pornos’ “Moves.” We all need to put food on our families, you know, and commercials are one way songwriters do that these days. No problem. The last time this happened with this band it was “The Bleeding Heart Show” and the University Of Phoenix, which Carl Newman was compelled to defend by saying:

It’s a university, or a school, and it might be a crappy school, but it seems like letting a crappy school use your song is probably better than letting the best business use your song.

Who knows where T-Mobile stands on the spectrum of best and worst businesses, but while we’re quoting A.C.’s last stance, let’s also include this salient bit:

We’re just trying to get by in this world. When you play music for so long and don’t make any money, and people start offering you money for things that involve no effort on your part, you start going, ‘I’ll do that.’”

They did that:

Girls - "Vomit"

“Vomit,” the moodily meditative first single from Girls’ forthcoming, second LP Father, son, Holy Ghost now has an official video directed by Austin Rhodes. It’s crisp and sharp in a way that’s quite distinct from the band’s earlier, very memorable Focus Creeps clips, but is similarly vivid and transfixing. Chris Owens sings about spending nights alone looking for love, and most of the video focuses solely on a beautiful 1966 Ford Mustang convertible driving on remarkably empty urban streets. Eventually Chris’s teeth make an appearance, then his hands on a guitar, then his whole face, and Girls’ bassist JR White also stops in. But mostly this is an attempt to convey desolation and alienation in spite of a lifestyle of beauty and certain abundance, which a lonely, cherry red Ford Mustang cruising around the city streets nails pretty well.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – “Little Blu House”

BTW Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s lo-fi, smoked out, psychedelic backbeat rock track “Little Blu House” is one of many high points on the band’s heavily recommended nine-track debut LP, and here it gets the video it deserves: lo-fi, smoked-out and psychedelic, which I guess means all the pretty girls and self-smoking cigarettes are the “backbeat rock” part of the equation. Watch and enjoy, just turn it off around the 2:30 mark if your boss doesn’t look kindly on you peeping videos with bare breasts and blood trickling down them.

Kanye West - Flashing Lights ft. Dwele (Dir. Spike Jonze )

Spike Jonze’s recent endeavors range from an action-packed music video for the Beastie Boys to a companion film for Aracde Fire’s The Suburbs. Now, via Jay-Z’s recent interview with Hot 97′s Angie Martinez, we learn that the acclaimed director is also at the helm of the music video for “Otis”, from Jay-Z and Kanye’s forthcoming joint LP Watch the Throne.

Jay-Z didn’t add much in the way of details, other than that they recently filmed the video. Below, you can check out a picture from the shoot, which took place in Los Angeles, according to RapFix. The single’s artwork, designed by Italian fashion designer Riccardo Tisci, appears to be predominantly featured.

Jonze’s history with ‘The Throne’ extends back to his collaboration with West on the 2009 short film We Were Once A Fairytale. We also have that video posted below.

Watch the Throne hits iTunes August 8th, with an expanded release to follow on August 12th.
