British rawk revivalists the Darkness, still best-known for believing in a thing called love, parted ways in 2006, but they’re back together and yowling as loud as ever. In the video for their new single “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us,” a young megafan shows off a Darkness shrine, and a series of ridiculous animations show the band in all sorts of absurdist rock-out posts. This is a video where the guitarist’s arms turn into guitars when he’s playing a guitar solo, and then his legs and head do too. So obviously, this is something you’re going to want to watch. Girls’ Generation Bring K-Pop To Letterman

A few months ago, this New York Times article sent me on an hours-long YouTube binge of Korean pop videos. K-pop is a relatively young genre, and if you give yourself over to it, it works as a deeply fascinating funhouse-mirror reflection of the last few generations of Western teenpop. K-pop groups tend to include ridiculously huge numbers of singers, all wearing very complicated haircuts, all singing factory-pop songs put together with absolute precision by teams of professionals. The ultra-glossy high-budget videos are compulsively watchable even when the songs are boring ballads, and the entire genre is a big enough deal, apparently, that a K-pop showcase can sell out Madison Square Garden.

My understanding is limited, but apparently the nine-member Girls’ Generation is the biggest girl group in Korea, and they’re also huge in Japan. And now Universal is making a respectable attempt at breaking them in the U.S., releasing an Anglicized version of their album The Boys and getting them booked on last night’s episode of the Late Show With David Letterman. Below, watch the band performing the English version of their ridiculously catchy monster hit “The Boys,” a song that was better when only its chorus was in English but which will probably be stuck in your head all day regardless. As a special bonus, you get to see Bill Murray and Regis Philbin reacting to the spectacle exactly as you’d expect.

I was introduced to “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” iPad app by my friend’s five-year-old son while traveling the North Island of New Zealand at the end of last year.

I remember being amazed by the quality and detail that went into this interactive narrative experience. Created by Moontbot Studios and directed by William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg, the app is an adaptation of the award-winning short-film of the same name that, as of last week, has been nominated for an Oscar.

Inspired in equal measures by Hurricane Katrina, Buster Keaton, The Wizard of Oz and a love for books, “Morris Lessmore” is a story about a man’s love for books. After a huge storm that takes everything from him, the protagonist finds himself in a magical place where books are alive and become his friends. The rest is a journey worth watching. Enjoy.

It’s now a full-length album that’s set to come out next week, and we’ve already heard the Victoria Legrand collab “Seven Stars” and seen a couple of glimpses of the film-score portion of the album. And now here’s another one: The proggy, psychedelic instrumental “Parade” set to scenes from Excursion To The Moon, Segundo de Chomón’s 1908 remake of the Méliès film. (Remakes have apparently been a movie-industry standby for longer than I realized.)

Italians Do It Better co-honcho Johnny Jewel hit a pop cultural sweet spot last year, making in-roads with the Gossling demo by landing one of his Chromatics tracks on the much-loved Drive OST. His stardusted and narcotic Italo production style seemed to influence a lot of that soundtrack; in fact, the lesser known and more recent Jewel vehicle, Desire, had a song on in it as well (“Under Your Spell”). Desire is Jewell with fellow Chromatic Nat Walker and vocalist Megan Louise, and here they are with the video for the glam electro-strut cut “Don’t Call.” It’s directed by Alberto Rossini, who recently helmed a clip for that other Jewell outlet, Glass Candy. All of which is to say, he stays busy. The song is old, but the video is new. The clip was filmed in Miami during a hurricane watch, if that affects your enjoyment any.

Evanescence fans rejoice and behold, the new video for "My Heart Is Broken." Directed by Dean Karr — who's known for his work with other artists like Dave Matthews Band, Cypress Hill, and Marilyn Manson — it's the second from the band's recent eponymous release.

The "Broken" clip, which premiered on the band's Vevo page earlier today (and then promptly made its graceful, illegal jump to fans' Youtube pages, like the one embedded below), features pretty lights and a field of wheat, in addition to the usual Evanescence fare — frontwoman Amy Lee in pale chiffon and corsets, a fantasy world involving lots of wind and unpleasant situations (see: the video for "Bring Me to Life"), and dreadlock-banging galore. In the making-of clip posted four days ago to tease the video's release, Lee confesses jokingly,"I'll write stuff and not really know what I'm writing about, listen back, and then think, 'Oh, I've got to change my life!' "

It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting "creativity". The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites-- they just have to convince a judge that the site is "dedicated to copyright infringement."

The government has already wrongly shut down sites without any recourse to the site owner. Under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost us $47 million tax dollars a year — that's for a fix that won't work, disrupts the internet, stifles innovation, shuts out diverse voices, and censors the internet. This bill is bad for creativity and does not protect your rights.

Vera Todorova, a young Berlin-based film-maker, was given a wildly ambitious brief: to remake the George Lucas cult sci-fi debut THX1138 for not much more than the cost of a couple of flights to Berlin and back. She rose to the task, amazingly, and delivered a memorably great narrative video that starts like some contemporary newsreel footage of civil disobedience and ends up…well, shan’t spoil it, but “demented, sci-fi mind control” is not a phrase we use often. But we will. And it fits here.

The original Marcel the Shell with Shoes On video pitter-pattered her tiny way into our hearts last year with its droll, introspective examination of life on the tiny scale. The sequel taps into that same vein of comedy, the one that makes us love “Parks and Recreation” so much, this time as Marcel explains the hardships of life as a shell.

9. Official Ojai Valley Taxidermy TV Commercial
The Chuck Testa video burned through the life-cycle of a meme faster than ever before, starting at instant classic, hitting critical mass and finally settling in overused anguish all in the span of a few days. The video itself was an exercise in viral marketing, having been created by Youtube personalities Rhett and Link for their IFC show Commercial Kings.

Andy Samberg’s Lonely Island musical-comedy SNL spinoff very much exemplifies the term “hit or miss.” The difference between a miss and a hit? Turns out, it’s Justin Timberlake. Samberg and Timberlake’s characters from the original “Dick in a Box” skit return, this time to indulge in a Summer-lovin’ fueled Lady Gaga sandwich. Remember, with a honey in the middle there’s some leeway.

5. Neil Patrick Harris’ 2011 Tony Awards Opening Number

Barney Stinson may be one of our favorite on-screen characters, but his real-life counterpart Neil Patrick Harris is just as awesome. NPH opened this year’s Tony Awards with this spectacular musical number entitled “Broadway: It’s not just for gays anymore.”

This video popped up on Reddit a few months ago with a simple headline: “My friend wanted to shave his amazing beard. I said ‘okay, but let us shave it in style.’" The result is this 43-second video of a man transforming before our eyes from a skinhead to a mountain man, pausing at pirate, punk, biker and more on the way.

George Michael would be proud.

2. The Crazy Nastyass Honey Badger

There was a moment earlier this month as I sat watching the 2011 SEC Championship football game, when I thought to myself, are the announcers really discussing a Youtube video about a badass honey badger right now? Their reason was to reference the nickname given to LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu, inspired by the video in question. It was in that moment I realized just how popular the Honey Badger had become. Watch the video and you too will understand just how badass the Honey Badger is.

1. Nyan Cat

Of all the memes and viral videos of 2011, none have seen the instant popularity and ubiquity of Nyan Cat. The formula: an animated cat, a pop-tart for a body, flying through space with a rainbow trail, all set to a repetitive, mind-meltingly catchy song. The result? There’s also some sort of plot, but good luck following it. The Juan Maclean and LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy Whang, both of whom guest on the song, make appearances in the video, and Whang’s stuntwoman gets to bust out some impressive BMX tricks for absolutely no tangible reason.
