"Wail to God" Music Video

The official music video for Ape School's 'Wail to God'. Animated/ Directed by Anthony F. Schepperd.

Anthony F. Schepperd’s “Wail To God” is a subversion of conventional animation. Suffused with an unorthodox style reminiscent of Bill Plympton, viewers are jolted by constant shifts in perspective, while the uncanny non-narrative plays out with a graceful continuity.

In “Wail To God,” there are none of the usual clichés. The darting changes in scale, color, and motion are freakishly cool, while the loose and frenetic line-work—moving with the ferocity of brush-fire—add another layer of unpolished appeal.

Voltage

For another way to visualize sound, over the summer Brazil’s Bam Studio sent us an animation imagining modular synths connecting to one another in an electrical, energy-filled trance. The animation is fantastic and injects plenty of traditional techniques into the digital work. Co-director William Paiva has added a making-of video showing just how much hand drawing went into the project. It’s actually quite beautiful to see just this layer.

Just like modular synthesizers, people connect with each other in order to achieve diverse objectives. In Voltage, robots, half-human and half-synthesizer, powered by a huge amount of energy, connect to each other in an electric and chaotic trance.

JESUS2000

A hip short created by another crop of brilliant students at Gobelins by the names of Rémi Bastie, Jean-Baptiste Cumont, Clément Desnos, Jonathan and Nicolas Djob Nkondo Pegon. A cute idea that is carried along by energetic Flash animation, which seems to be a focus that is growing in popularity at Gobelins. Maybe we can look forward to a rise in flash animation quality for film and television in the coming years if this trend continues.

PhotoSketch: Internet Image Montage

Designed by a team at the National University of Singapore, PhotoSketch is the latest and greatest in image creation systems. The full description of how it works can be found here, but the basic process is this:

Draw a basic object, name it and repeat this for any other objects you want in your picture, then name the background. PhotoSketch then searches the Internet for images that match the descriptions given, and after a bit of sorting out, you have all the elements necessary for seamless stitching. The possibilities seem endless. Check out the video!

We present a system that composes a realistic picture from a simple freehand sketch annotated with text labels. The composed picture is generated by seamlessly stitching several photographs in agreement with the sketch and text labels; these are found by searching the Internet. Although online image search generates many inappropriate results, our system is able to automatically select suitable photographs to generate a high quality composition, using a filtering scheme to exclude undesirable images. We also provide a novel image blending algorithm to allow seamless image composition.

Each blending result is given a numeric score, allowing us to find an optimal combination of discovered images. Experimental results show the method is very successful; we also evaluate our system using the results from two user studies.

What is a browser?

Google has a pretty cool animated video clip explaining just what a web browser is, now I know what you might be thinking and I thought the very same thing, how can anyone in this day and age not know what a web browser is....you'd be surprised. After you get this basic reminder of what exactly the browser is, be sure to watch the second video below of Google employee Scott, who asks New Yorkers what the difference between a search engine and web browser is.

Back in April Scott, a Google employee took to the streets of Times Square in New York and asked the question, What is a browser? The responses people came up with are priceless. You might be shocked to know that less than 8% of the people asked on this day actually knew what a browser was.

Basic explanation of the web browser. Learn more at http://whatbrowser.org

Beethoven 5th Symphony 5 (graphical score animation)

FAQ

Q: What do the colors in the bar-graph score mean?
A: The colors show which instruments are playing. Here's a chart:
http://www.musanim.com/pdf/Instruments_B5.pdf

Q: Please tell me more about the composer.
A: You can read about Beethoven here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beethoven

Q: Who is playing this?
A: I licensed this recording from
http://www.royalty-free-classical-music.org/
It is performed by the Royalty Free Classical Music Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Keith J. Salmon. I don't know anything beyond that about the recording (like, whether it is a real orchestra or synthetic, who are its members, when and where was the recording made, etc.)

Q: Is there a way I could make bar-graph scores like this myself?
A: The Music Animation Machine MIDI file player will generate this display; you can get the (Windows) software here:
http://www.musanim.com/player/
There are lots of places on the web where you can get MIDI files; I usually go to the Classical Archives site first:
http://www.classicalarchives.com/

Q: Could you please do a MAM video of _________?
A: First, check my "to do" list:
http://www.musanim.com/all/MAMToDoLis... ...
If the piece isn't listed, read the "Could you please do a MAM video of _________?" item on my main FAQ:
http://www.musanim.com/mam/mamfaq.htm... ...
and if you think I'd consider doing it, email me (stephen at musanim dot com).
